TRAX 2001
I arranged to meet up with the Pug Performance group at services just off the M40, though just missed them and had to meet up at Silverstone Racing Circuit near Northampton, with them. Stuck in traffic, my XS nearly overheated twice and on both occasions, I had to pop the bonnet and wiggle one of the wires leading to the radiator fan to get it going. This it did at high speed both times and quickly restored the temperature to near enough normal. Since that event it has been suggested that I make a bypass switch for inside the car to switch the fan on when needed without waiting to see if it comes on or not. This was a brilliant idea as Peugeots that have been souped up can be prone to overheating.
I followed a few other nicely modified 205s in and was directly behind Kellies pug which has been a feature car in Revs magazine. I met up with Colin from PPM there eventually and parked my XS up at the PGAC stand. I left it with the bonnet up most of the day as people just walked straight past it otherwise! It is that ordinary looking!
- With the bonnet up it caused quite a bit of interest and several people asked me about the conversion, including the owner of a 106 XSi with the same engine in. He had the same difficulty with regards to the left hand engine mounting bracket needing to be cut away. The rest of the conversion on a 106 was much more straightforward, especially the loom.
- I watched some of the 0-60 sprints and did strongly contemplate having a go, bit after seeing an RS Turbo pack in, the PPM modified 106 with throttlebodies snap a throttle cable (2nd time round it got 6.4 secs!!!) and many cars not even reaching 60mph before they had to brake, I decided not to. The risks are very high of doing damage to the car in such a test and with the nature of my driveshafts, I could have been left very high and dry had anything happened to the passenger side one.
- Still, aside from that, I managed to meet quite a few other Peugeot enthusiasts and share experiences with people with similar cars.
- I still hope to test my car for performance figures and will post here as soon as it has undergone some testing.
- I took a few photos with a standard camera (my Dad wouldn’t let me borrow the digital one on this occasion!). The results are shown below (note my XS being pointed at in one of the pictures!)
- My sympathy goes out to the owners of the Scooby and Porsche that stacked it whilst on the track with minimal track day cover.
