INSURANCE

***As mentioned on the main page the cost of insuring a heavily modified XS is not that steep at all! My car is a warm hatch that has been modified, so that the result is a premium for a cheap insurance car with extra added for the modifications. The car from which my engine came is in fact a Group 13 (1 is cheapest, 20 is dearest) and that engine in my XS has a decatted performance exhaust system, induction kit as well as the car being 100kg lighter than the group 13 car and is lowered too! My premium last year from Privilege Insurance was £740 fully comp with protected NCD, this year I was quoted £606 from Adrian Flux as well as several other similarly low quotes. The policy I ended up with only cost £569 fully comprehensive with protected NCD from ATS Insurance, which includes many benefits, mentioned below. I'm only 23 years old, with 5 years (full & protected) No Claims Bonus, no convictions (yet!) and one non-fault accident and live in a medium risk area. This year I have been quoted just £357 fully comprehensive with protected NCD (24 year old with 6 years NCB).***

Here are some telephone numbers for insurance companies I found to be nice to XS owners (of course there are other factors to take into account especially with with regards to your own personal circumstances)

HIC Insurance

My current insurer and has been for the last few years. In my case they have offered by far the best quote. I now pay less that £300 TPFT and that includes breakdown cover and many other benefits. They are the sister company of Adrian Flux so you may find they refuse to beat a quote from them and vice versa.

ATS Insurance

0870 607 2670

Cover for modifications with a system for total cost of all mods done. They note all mods as well as take into account engine power increases in percentages (e.g. 1-10%, 11-20% etc.) The policy does not allow cover for driving other cars if under 25 but does give a 10% discount at ATS garages. You also get cover for recovery following an accident by ATS.They've also won awards and are underwritten by one of the UKs biggest insurers.

Adrian Flux

08700 777888 Modified

08700 777240 Standard

08700 765450 Hot Hatches

Have given me very competitive quotes the last couple of years. They are generally well known for being the biggest modified car insurer so do not hesitate about declaring any mods to them. They were only just beaten by ATS this year when quoting me.

Greenlight

01277 263030

Another company good with modified cars. The guy I spoke to there also new Pug Performance well and Colin from there will often recommend them. They offer quotes around the same as Adrian Flux and also offer cover for track days.

Tesco

0845 300 4400

Surprisingly good with modifications. They did offer very competitive quotes both times that I tried them. Some good policy benefits too.

Privilege

0870 243 5555

My previous insurer. They are the daughter company of Direct Line so will give much the same quotes. They were fine with all mods including an engine change. All was listed down on the schedule. They worked out more expensive when I moved nearer to London.

Hastings Direct

0800 00 1066

Gave me my cheapest quote for when my XS was standard. Included cover for driving other cars though engine modifications are not allowed. They will increase premiums heavily for speeding convictions but not red light offences.

Liverpool - Victoria

0800 514 514

Someone e-mailed me about this company for a fully comprehensive policy with no NCD for an 18 year old, they quoted just over £1000.

If you think your insurer was particularly good with their quote, please let me know and I shall add them to the table. I made out a list of insurers from Yellow Pages and the backs of car magazines. Surprisingly, many which claim to beat quotes and cover modifications would turn out to be useless in my particular situation. I suspect some companies may be really good with XS owners under 21. If that is you please let me know, especially if you're 17 and have an XS. Please e-mail me the details and I shall add them here.

You may be surprised to know that the insurance group of a standard 205 XS is now only Group 7. I was informed of this by an insurance company due to the fact the insurance premium increases quite a bit from group 7 to 8. This car is listed as 8 in car guides I have looked at. Considering that a 205 GTi is between groups 12 and 15, the AX GT is 9 -11 and a Fiesta XR2 is 10, this means quite a nice difference in premium, if like me, you're under 25.
My previous car was a Fiesta MK2 1.1, which was group 3-5! The difference in performance between in this case, a group 3 car to group 7, was pleasantly impressive.
Compare the quote(s) in the table below to, say, paying over £1000TPFT for a 1.6GTi. In this case why pay so much more in insurance to have a 1.6 GTi rather than an XS? Half of what you pay for is three letters on your boot, asking people to try it out without permission! (though the 1.9GTi is a stormer!)
The quotes in the table below are for an unmodified car (unless otherwise stated). This model can be modified very much the same as a GTi if so desired, performance exhausts, suspension lowering, air filters, front grille, even 14/15" alloys can comfortably fit under the wheel-arches!

Below is a table of insurance premiums paid by XS owners as examples of how cheap 205 XS insurance is... If you would like to submit the insurance details for your XS, please e-mail me and I shall include them here. Many thanks.

INSURANCE AND MODIFICATIONS/CONVICTIONS

PLEASE NOTE: This part of the page is actually about when I insured the XS as standard and is actually a couple of years old now, so I'm not sure of the accuracy of this info now. I left that insurer as they wouldn't allow my engine conversion.

This is a brief summary of costs which would be added to my insurance premium by my current insurer. Please be aware that all insurance companies work differently and are liable to charge various amounts for different modifications. Companies specialising in modified cars are liable to be more understanding of your mods and charge according to situation. With regular companies you may benefit with some mods though others could be out the window from high charges or being disallowed on your policy. Good modified car insurers will give something like a 25% premium increase for most mods within reason.
Whichever, my insurance tips page goes into more detail on the importance of declaring your mods to your insurance company and it is always recommended as you may deeply regret not paying an extra £50 for a simple mod than having the insurance company invalidate your claim after an accident.

This is a list of premium charges with my insurance company (I'm allowed just 2 mods), for indicative purposes only:

MODIFICATION

INSURANCE PREMIUM CHANGE?

Engine changes (e.g. filter, cam, balanced flywheel, ignition etc.)

NOT ALLOWED

Exhaust changes (full system inc. manifold or just backbox)

Suspension changes (e.g. lowering, uprated shocks)

$58.51

Alloy wheels (remember, they were only OPTIONAL on the XS)

$27.87

Transmission changes (quickshift conversion etc.)

FREE

Plastic side mouldings

FREE

Plastic wheelarches (give the appearance of a GTI)

Thatcham CAT 1 Alarm system

No change (vehicle is low value)

Red light offence (jumping a red light!)

Again, even with the convictions, some companies are more suited to your individual perspective, my particular company obviously doesn't think highly of speeding.
